Alchi is situated 70 kms. from Leh. It is the only Gompa in Ladakh to have been built on flat ground. The gompa was built in 11th century by the great translater Ringchen Zangpo. This Gompa is considered to be among the most extensive examples of Buddhist art in Kashmir. The region around Alchi was once vital for trade and cultural contact with the rest of India. When Islamic armies entered the subcontinent, thereafter the Buddhist monuments and monasteries were ones that suffered most under the hands of iconoclasm. However, Alchi, escaped destruction including some of the 900-year-old paintings and murals. The complex of Choskhor consists five separate temples, various residential buildings and scattered chortens. Among the oldest buildings are Dukhang and Sumtsek temple.
A short distance from Alchi is the SASPUL village which is worth a visit for its hidden cave temple.
Hemis Gompa is 45 km from Leh. It is the most famous gompa of ladakh , this gompa belongs to the Drukpa order dating back to 17th century.
This gompa is 17kms. from Leh and is Ladakh's most photographed and architecturally impressive gompa. The gompa was founded in 15th Century and has got whitewashed Chortens and cubic monk quarters.

Known as "water spirits", the KLUKKHYIL Gompa was built in 14th Century and it
is the first known gompa to have been built by Tibetan monks. The gompa
belongs to the Gelupa Order and houses 150 monks.
