Hemis Gompa Tour

Hemis Gompa is 45 km from Leh. It is the most famous gompa of ladakh , this gompa belongs to the Drukpa order dating back to 17th century. From the main enterance a flight of stairs leads to the rectangular courtyardwhich the place where Chaam Dances are performed, During the performance Lamas dressed in brocade silk costumes presents the episodes from Buddhist mythology which is accompanied by crashes of cymbals, drums & groans from temple tpumpets.Hemis gompa is most famous for its largest Thangka of Ladakh region which is 12mts long which is decorated with pearls & other precious stones, this masterpeice is unrolled in every 12 years, it will be on show again in 2004. and there is an exellent library & some beutiful figures of Buddha. the gompa also hosts the famous annual festival which takes place here during the month of July.There is KOTSANG HERMITAGE GOMPA and some of the caves nearby.
